Brief

To provide clear audio for a dynamic motivational speaker and quality sound reinforcement for a music band in a venue that is very acoustically challenging. Visuals to relay cameras at the event and to display song words and play DVDs. For a major event taking place over a 10 week period in Winchester cathedral. Number of delegates expected 2000.

Audio and video feeds were also provided to stream the event to external venues over the internet.

Solution

Audio

  • As with most Cathedrals they have very challenging acoustics, even more so when you have a dynamic presenter, hearing good speech indelibility and good music sound enforcement can be a challenge rather than hearing an audio echo noise!
  • Provided a PA system that had multiples of speakers (a pair every 12 meters) down the nave and side naves. These speakers had directional characteristics to keep the sound off the walls. They were mounted on stands above head height and tilted towards the delegates using angle adaptors. A total of 18 main speakers were used plus 6 18" Subs for a touch of bottom end impact energy for the music and DVDs
  • Each set of speakers down the nave was time delayed to compensate for the time the sound from other speakers arrived
  • In ear monitors and an electric drum kit was used for the band to keep all stage noise to a minimum
  • All the time delays and processing was controlled via a digital sound desk
  • An audio feed to stream audio to external venues was provided

Visuals

  • 3 12ft x 9ft screens were used for the displays. These were mounted on truss legs to give the screens plenty of height and stability. 5500 lumen projectors were used to project onto these screens
  • Screen control was achieved using an Extron ISS503 seamless switcher that switched between cameras, song words, power point and DVD. We could also overlay songwords over the camera images
  • A scan-converted composite feed was supplied to stream the video to overflow venues
