What size screen do I need?

At every presentation no matter what size it is vital that all the delegates/audience can see clearly the screen and be able to read the content. So we have a venue of a certain size with a certain number of people. How are we going to make sure everybody can see and clearly read the contents on the screens?

Screens come in many different sizes from plasma screens where common sizes are 42″ through to 65″ screens. Then you have projector screen which can start at 6ft x 4ft pull up screens and then you have fast fold screens which include sizes of 8ft x 6ft through to 16ft x 9ft and larger!

To work out the ideal screen size so all the delegates can read all the content we use the following formula:

Distance of the furthest delegate to the screen / 10 = The ideal screen height.

For example you have a venue where the furthest delagate is sitting from the screen is 20 meters (65 feet). Then the ideal screen height is: 2 meters (6.5ft)

Screen sizes are standard so the ideal screen size would be: 8ft x 6ft screen in 4:3 ratio (standard TV format) or you could go up to 10ft x 7.5ft.

If you are showing mainly DVDs or large powerpoint font sizes then you could get away by dividing the screen height by 12 or 14 rather than 10.

REMEMBER:

With projection screens you need to ask yourself is how high is the ceiling? If you have a higher ceiling then you can have a bigger screen. If you have a large screen and a low ceiling then the bottom of the screen will be too low and people a few rows back will not see the bottom of the screen.

Another question you need to ask which only applies to projecton screens is how much projection distance is avalible. (The space required to project the image onto the screen from the projector) You can either have front or rear projecton screens.
